The Cultures of Inquiry mind map supports a workshop that explores the different values, traditions, and approaches to research. The session begins in Greece with the creation of the first Academy and the foundations of Western Philosophy. Then the emergence of natural science and the observation and experiment approach to inquiry is explored.

The approaches to natural science prove to be limited in their ability to provide insights into social issues and problems. Thus the rise of more inductive qualitative methods. The session culminates in a discussion of the contemporary approaches used in management research. Management research is more pragmatic than some of the other fields and makes use of all types of methods - qualitative, quantitative, and mixed.
