Identify the Applicable Design Principles

Identify the cross-cutting characteristics that the design team wants embedded into the design. There are many potential sources of design principles including: theories, concepts, models, requirements, contextual factors, etc. While this step may occasionally seem redundant, it is the opportunity to select the most salient concepts and principles identified in the previous steps.

Identify design principles unique to your particular organization. This is an opportunity to identify the most important design considerations. These can come from previous steps in the design approach or from additional sources.

Clearly describe the principles and record the detailed descriptions. Detail is important to ensure the design team has a common understanding and definition for each principle. Overtime eight key design principles have emerged as universal to leadership and management system design.

Once the established principles are reviewed and selected, the design team is usually ready to identify any additional cross-cutting characteristics.
