Knowledge Management
Knowledge Management - Where to from here?
The ability to capture, transfer and leverage knowledge is essential to achieving and sustaining high performance. Organizations have tried to document their lessons learned and best practices. While this is essential it has proven to be insufficient. Others have focused on the people and making sure that the environment, development, and relationships facilitate the capture and transfer of knowledge.
While this is also essential, in the end it appears to be insufficient. Some have developed formal and informal structures and processes to organize and distribute knowledge. Again, while this is also essential it is in the end, insufficient. Advances in technology and in particular search engines may provide the greatest opportunity to integrate and leverage the three key foundational pieces of documentation, people, and structure. Ultimately it is the integration of the various design considerations that will help to make future knowledge management systems more effective and more importantly - more useful.
