Two Phases to Research Design - T + U

There are two major phases to the research design process. The “T” is composed of the first four components: (1) problem, (2) purpose, (3) research questions, and (4) conceptual framework. The “U” is composed of five components: (5) literature review, (6) overall approach, (7) data collection, (8) data analysis, and (9) conclusions.

Step 1 - Getting the “T” Right

The first phase is to get the “T” right. Until these four foundational components are developed and aligned there is no basis for discussing the components in the U. The T is the guidance system for the research study and the development of the U.

Step 2 - Developing the “U”

Once the T is established, you are ready to develop the components of the U which form the core of the research methodology.
